The last hurrah of summer, Labour Day weekend provides a chance for residents and tourists to enjoy the tail end of the season before fall's rush.

"It's an interesting year," said Andrew Weir, vice-president of communications for Tourism Toronto. "A lot more people are staying closer to home, which is positive and negative for us. Some people who would travel to Toronto are staying home but people who live in Toronto aren't travelling so we're seeing more local visitors. A lot of tourists come from southern Ontario."

Weir said the highlight of Labour Day weekend is the CNE, which runs Aug. 15 to Sept. 1.

"It's a cherished tradition," he said. "It's an iconic family thing. A lot of people come out Labour Day weekend. People want to feel Labour Day weekend is still a summer weekend and want to go out and enjoy."
